Armenia-Azerbaijan battle: Tanks ablaze as combating erupts over disputed area

Heavy fighting has broken out between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, in which both civilians and combatants have been killed.

Armenia accused Azerbaijan of air and artillery attacks, reported shooting down helicopters and destroying tanks, and declared martial law.

Azerbaijan said it launched a counter-offensive in response to the shelling.

The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is controlled by ethnic Armenians.

You broke away from the Soviet Union in the last few years. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the communist state that wanted to suppress ethnic and religious differences.
