Coronavirus might overwhelm France, high physician warns

France will face a month-long coronavirus epidemic that will overwhelm its health system if nothing changes, one of the country’s top medical figures warned on Sunday.
“The second wave is coming faster than expected,” Patrick Bouet, head of the National Council of the Order of Doctors, told the weekly Journal du Dimanche.
New restrictions to slow the spread of the disease in the hardest hit areas of the country, including the Mediterranean city of Marseille and the Paris region, have met with local opposition.
Bouet told the newspaper that Health Minister Olivier Veran’s warnings this week had not gone far enough.
“He did not say that in three to four weeks, if nothing changes, France will see a widespread outbreak across its entire territory for several long autumn and winter months,” said Bouet.
Medical staff would not be available to provide reinforcement and the French health system would not be able to meet all of the requirements placed on it, he warned.
The health workers responsible for the spring miracle could not fill those loopholes, he added.
“Many of them are exhausted and traumatized.”
France’s health service recorded 14,412 new cases in the past 24 hours on Saturday – slightly less than the record of 16,000 recorded on both Thursday and Friday.
In the past seven days, 4,102 people have been hospitalized, 763 of whom are being treated in the intensive care unit.
On Saturday, bar and restaurant owners in Marseille demonstrated in front of the city’s commercial court against forced closings due to begin tonight.
