Jada Pinkett Smith Talks About Being Mother-Shamed & Willow Smith Talks About Being “Shunned” By Her Personal Neighborhood
Now you know that when the Smith family gathers around the red table, the discussions become real when they talk about a variety of topics that always pique the interest of many.
The latest episode of “Red Table Talk” was no different when Jada, Willow and Adrienne Banfield Norris talked about motherly shame. Jada shared her own experience of her mother’s shame and used the time Willow cut her hair.
Jada said, “When people said, ‘Oh my god, I can’t believe you shaved Willow’s head!’ If they could have seen this child’s expression of freedom when they saw their hair fall to the floor, as a mother looking at this and experiencing this with her, there is nothing anyone can tell me to tell me it is was wrong. Not a person because I was there, I looked at them. I saw their face. I knew the journey she and I took together to get to that point. So it really didn’t matter what someone said. “
Willow also shared her own experiences of being judged by her own community, adding, “Especially with the African American community, I felt like I and Jaden were a little shunned. We’re not going to be proud of them because they’re too different, they’re too weird … Even some of our family members, I would think they thought we were too different. “
The ladies were also joined by Ashley Graham and Jessica Alba, who also shared their own experiences of the mother’s shame as the concept was tightened during the current pandemic.
