President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden offered completely different versions of the federal government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
When asked how both candidates were dealing with the pandemic during the debate, Biden pointed out the staggering number of Americans who have died or contracted coronavirus since the pandemic hit the U.S. coast.
“When he was presented with that number, (Trump) said, ‘It is what it is. ‘Well it is what it is because you are who you are. That’s why it is so. The president has no plan. He didn’t lay out anything. He knew how serious that was back in February … “Biden said, referring to Trump’s interviews with journalist Bob Woodward, in which he indicated that he wanted to downplay the coronavirus so as not to cause national panic.
“You don’t panic. He panicked, ”added Biden.
Trump replied saying to Biden, “You could never have done the job we did,” quoting the Obama administration’s handling of swine flu.
“We have the clothes. We have the masks. We made the fans. They wouldn’t have made fans. And now we are weeks away from a vaccine. We already make therapeutics. Fewer people are dying, “said Trump, blaming China for the virus, arguing that his administration’s supposed lack of success in fighting the pandemic was the result of bad press.
“I’m telling you, Joe, you could never have done the job we did. You don’t have it in your blood. You never could have done that, Joe, ”added Trump.
The president then brought up the Trump administration’s plan to quickly distribute a coronavirus vaccine once it is ready to use. But Biden pushed back, wondering why Americans should trust someone who lies so often.
“This is the same man who told you by Easter that this would be gone. In the warm weather it would be gone – like a miracle. By the way, maybe you could inject some bleach into your arm, “Biden said.
Trump claimed during the debate that the bleaching comment he made earlier this year was sarcastic. CNN has verified this before and there was simply no indication that he was anything but serious.
